The world of lasers can be overwhelming. Hopefully this will help you understand the differences.
The term LASER is the acronym for LIGHT AMPLIFICATION by STIMULATED EMISSIONS of RADIATION. Don't be alarmed by the word "radiation" as this is different from an x-ray or radiation one might receive to reduce a tumor.
The term IPL or Intense Pulse Light, also referred to as the "Photofacial" for all intent and purposes, has been classified as a laser treatment, although is really an intensity of light that has the effects of a laser. This is the least invasive treatment under the category of "lasers" and requires minimal downtime. IPL can be effective in treating "color - related" skin problems, such as hyperpigmentation and broken capillaries.
Fractional laser represents one of the latest and most promising advances in skin care for reversing the signs of aging. The patient receives almost the same results as the CO2 laser but without the downtime and pain. During the procedure, "fractions of laser" beams channel into the skin. This radiates under the surface of the skin, effecting a larger area. Brown spots, scarring, deep wrinkles and fine lines are reduced significantly. Plan on three to five days of downtime and ongoing healing for two weeks following the procedure.
CO2 laser completely ablates the skin and requires general anesthesia for one to tolerate the pain. Downtime is two to three weeks and requires bandages, antibiotics and seclusion. Although this procedure is still utilized for certain skin disorders and cancer, most patients prefer the fractional laser verses complete ablation.
